Transport Minister Lisa Raitt today confirmed a 2014 federal budget commitment to invest $58 million over two years to support interprovincial ferry services in Eastern Canada. The money is earmarked for ferry services between Saint John, NB, and Digby, NS; between Wood Islands, PEI and Caribou, NS; and between Iles-de-la-Madeleine, QC and Souris, PEI, until March 31, 2016.

Canadian Ferries Welcome Funding for Eastern Ferries, Call for More Investment

 

OTTAWA – July 16, 2014 – The Canadian Ferry Association CFA) welcomed today’s announcement of $58 million over 2 years to support ferries in Eastern Canada.

“We are happy to see the government reaffirming its commitment to Canada’s ferries.  This is a step in the right direction,” said Serge Buy, CEO of CFA.  “We hope that this support continues through larger funding programs like the Building Canada Fund.”

This funding will help support ferry operations and assets for three interprovincial ferries:

“Many people in eastern Canada take ferries on a regular basis, making them a key component of regional infrastructure.  They are a crucial part of Canada’s transportation system and deserve proper funding to keep them safe and efficient,” adds Mr. Buy.

CFOA member BC Ferries has announced Remontowa Shipbuilding of Poland as the winner of a $165 million contract to build 3 new intermediate-class ferries capable of operating with LNG or diesel fuels. The vessels will replace the 49-year old Queen of Burnaby and the 50-year old Queen of Nanaimo. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered in 2016-17.

May 1, 2014, Ottawa, ON - The Canadian Ferry Association Successfully hosted its first Roundtable meeting on Marine Labour Force & Skills Development. The meeting brought together representatives from marine training institutions and ferry operators to develop new and innovative ways to address looming labour shortages in the ferry sector.
