The annual Canadian Ferry Association (CFA) Conference & Trade Show, held this year in Halifax from September 24-26, travels to a different part of the country every year – and that gives the opportunity for delegates from across the country to give back to the host community.
“We believe that the CFA Conference & Trade Show is the best event for the marine sector in Canada, bar none. It has become a tradition at the conference to showcase some of the important charitable work happening in the communities we visit and give our delegates the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives while having a little fun along the way,” said Captain Jamie Marshall, Chair of CFA’s Board of Directors.
For 2017, CFA chose Feed Nova Scotia, the province’s main food distributor, as the recipient organization. Last year, food bank use in Nova Scotia had climbed faster than in any other Canadian province.
"Through the generosity of our delegates and a matching donation from CFA, we were so pleased to present a cheque to Feed Nova Scotia for $11,000.00. What an effort for such an important cause,” said Captain Marshall.
"A gift this size will allow us to distribute enough food for 17,000 meals--that's huge! And the real impact goes even deeper, because food is so much more than physical nourishment. It's comfort, it's peace of mind, and often it's a stepping stone to amazing things," said Karen Theriault, Director of Development and Communications, who spoke to the crowd about the work of Feed Nova Scotia. "The generosity of everyone in the room that night was truly overwhelming. It's a gift we won't soon forget.”

La conférence et foire commerciale annuelle de l'Association canadienne des traversiers (ACT), qui a eu lieu cette année à Halifax du 24 au 26 septembre, est tenue, chaque année, dans une région différente du pays – offrant aux délégués des quatre coins du pays une occasion de redonner à la collectivité locale.
« Nous croyons que la conférence et foire commerciale de l'ACT est incontestablement le meilleur événement pour le secteur maritime au Canada. Il s'agit maintenant d'une tradition de présenter, au cours de la conférence, certaines des activités importantes de bienfaisance menées dans les collectivités que nous visitons et de donner l'occasion à nos délégués de poser un geste concret pour changer les vies des gens, tout en s'amusant un peu en même temps », a affirmé le capitaine Jamie Marshall, président du conseil d'administration de l'ACT.
Pour la conférence de 2017, l'ACT a choisi de remettre les fonds amassés à Feed Nova Scotia, la plus grande banque alimentaire de la province. L'an dernier, le recours aux banques alimentaires a augmenté plus rapidement en Nouvelle-Écosse que dans toutes les autres provinces canadiennes.
« Grâce à la générosité de nos délégués et à un don jumelé de la part de l'ACT, nous sommes vraiment fiers de pouvoir remettre un chèque de 11 000 $ à l'organisme Feed Nova. Quel bel effort pour une cause si importante », a déclaré le capitaine Marshall.
« Ce montant nous permettra de distribuer des aliments pour 17 000 repas – c'est incroyable! Et l'effet est plus profond que l'on pense, parce que la nourriture ne nous permet pas uniquement de nourrir notre corps. Elle sert de réconfort, elle offre une tranquillité d'esprit, et souvent, elle constitue la première étape à la réalisation de choses merveilleuses, a expliqué la directrice de la croissance et des communications, Karen Theriault, qui s'est adressée à la foule à propos du travail de l'organisme Feed Nova Scotia. La générosité dont a fait preuve chacune des personnes présentes dans la salle ce soir-là était remarquable. Nous ne l'oublierons pas de sitôt. »

HALIFAX – The chief executive officer of the Canadian Ferry Association says Atlantic Canadian ferry systems set an example for the rest of the country.
The association’s annual conference got underway in Halifax on Sunday.
CEO Serge Buy says every year the conference brings together Canadian owners, operators and government officials in a different city to hear sector updates, review regulations and to look ahead to the future of ferries.
He says there are about 40 ferries in Atlantic Canada which in 2016 transported about 10 million passengers. When compared to the national rate of 53 million passengers, Buy says that’s quite an accomplishment.
“We look at our operators throughout the country,” said Buy. “In Atlantic Canada, we have fantastic operators who have been doing a great job for the regions that they serve.”
He says generally speaking the region has seen a slow increase in ferry passenger numbers over the years, which he attributes in part to the low dollar and a growing awareness of their sustainability and efficiency.
Buy says the conference will push the environmental conversation forward, looking at new ferry power options.

The theme for the 2017 Canadian Ferry Association (CFA) conference – which takes place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 24-26 September – will be ‘Charting Our Course: The People and Technology of Tomorrow’s Ferries’.
“We are looking forward to a fantastic line-up of speakers and presentations once again this year at CFA2017,” said Serge Buy, CEO of Canadian Ferry Association. “Our sector is growing and owners and operators are embracing new and emerging technology like never before, often benefitting the environment along the way.”
The event’s keynote speaker will be the new president and CEO of BC Ferries, Mark Collins, who will present his vision for the firm’s growth and development over the next five years.
The CFA2017 conference will also see discussion around various ferry power options, including LNG, hybrid and pure electric.
Gurinder Singh, Director of Global Marine for ABS, will outline different types of energy storage and generation technologies, along with their associated challenges and level of readiness for marine and offshore application.
Jason Chesko, senior manager for global market development at Methanex Corporation, will provide an overview of methanol fuel as part of a penal discussion. “Methanol is an ultra-clean burning marine fuel that complies with the shipping industry’s increasingly stringent emissions regulations,” he said.
On the ‘people’ side of the agenda, CFA2017 will consider the shortage of employees to take the place of those retiring from the industry.
“Across Canada, employers are grappling with the challenge of filling skilled trades positions just as a cohort of skilled baby boomers moves into retirement,” said Sarah Watts-Rynard, executive director of the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, who will highlight how apprenticeships can offer a pathway that can work for both employers and Canada’s indigenous communities.
The event closes with a gala dinner featuring remarks from the Mayor of Halifax and a raffle for a local charity. The event’s annual golf tournament, this year sponsored by Detyens Shipyards, will take place on September 27th.

Excitement builds for CFA conference
The annual Canadian Ferry Association conference is just days away, this year happening on Canada’s east coast in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The CFA Conference will also look at workforce strategies – from engaging Indigenous communities to embracing Millennials.
