{"id":11162,"date":"2017-09-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/canadianferry.ca\/cfa-news-canadian-ferry-association-conference-focus-technology\/"},"modified":"2021-01-22T12:06:19","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T17:06:19","slug":"cfa-news-canadian-ferry-association-conference-focus-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianferry.ca\/fr\/cfa-news-canadian-ferry-association-conference-focus-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"CFA in the News: Canadian Ferry Association conference to focus on technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cruise &amp; Ferry - September 19, 2017<\/p>\n<p>The theme for the 2017 Canadian Ferry Association (CFA) conference \u2013 which takes place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 24-26 September \u2013 will be \u2018Charting Our Course: The People and Technology of Tomorrow\u2019s Ferries\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking forward to a fantastic line-up of speakers and presentations once again this year at CFA2017,\u201d said Serge Buy, CEO of Canadian Ferry Association. \u201cOur sector is growing and owners and operators are embracing new and emerging technology like never before, often benefitting the environment along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2019s keynote speaker will be the new president and CEO of BC Ferries, Mark Collins, who will present his vision for the firm\u2019s growth and development over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>The CFA2017 conference will also see discussion around various ferry power options, including LNG, hybrid and pure electric.<\/p>\n<p>Gurinder Singh, Director of Global Marine for ABS, will outline different types of energy storage and generation technologies, along with their associated challenges and level of readiness for marine and offshore application.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Chesko, senior manager for global market development at Methanex Corporation, will provide an overview of methanol fuel as part of a penal discussion. \u201cMethanol is an ultra-clean burning marine fuel that complies with the shipping industry\u2019s increasingly stringent emissions regulations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On the \u2018people\u2019 side of the agenda, CFA2017 will consider the shortage of employees to take the place of those retiring from the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross Canada, employers are grappling with the challenge of filling skilled trades positions just as a cohort of skilled baby boomers moves into retirement,\u201d said Sarah Watts-Rynard, executive director of the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, who will highlight how apprenticeships can offer a pathway that can work for both employers and Canada\u2019s indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p>The event closes with a gala dinner featuring remarks from the Mayor of Halifax and a raffle for a local charity.
