{"id":11149,"date":"2016-05-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-16T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/canadianferry.ca\/ferries-applaud-changes-in-infrastructure-program\/"},"modified":"2016-05-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T04:00:00","slug":"ferries-applaud-changes-in-infrastructure-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianferry.ca\/fr\/ferries-applaud-changes-in-infrastructure-program\/","title":{"rendered":"[:en]Ferries applaud changes in infrastructure program[:fr]Les op\u00e9rateurs de traversiers se r\u00e9jouissent des modifications apport\u00e9es au programme d'infrastructures[:]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[:en]<strong>Ferries applaud changes in infrastructure program<\/strong><br \/>\nFerry operators now eligible for New Building Canada funding<\/p>\n<p>May 16, 2016, Ottawa, Ontario<\/p>\n<p>Ferry operators across Canada applaud new changes made by the federal government that will allow infrastructure projects related to ferries to be eligible for funding under the New Building Canada Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The original eligibility criteria for the fund, established in 2014, excluded most projects related to ferries.\u00a0 Very few operators have been able to apply for crucial infrastructure projects and this, in turn, has penalized the close to 55 million passengers, 32,000 employees and countless communities served by operators.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Ferry Association (CFA) and provincial governments have worked together urging Transport Minister Marc Garneau and Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi to revise the criteria to include ferries and ferry operators.<\/p>\n<p>Following constructive discussions at a meeting of federal and provincial ministers of transport in January 2016, Minister Sohi recently advised, in a letter (sent late April), his provincial counterparts that ferries would indeed be eligible to apply for and access the New Building Canada Fund.<\/p>\n<p>In a note to Canadian ferry operators announcing the changes, Minister Sohi provided further detail and confirmed that the New Building Canada Fund will now cover projects such as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Wharves and associated infrastructure,<\/li>\n<li>Passenger terminals,<\/li>\n<li>Access road infrastructures that provides the main vehicular access to the passenger ferry terminal,<\/li>\n<li>Vessel purchase and\/or conversion,<\/li>\n<li>Intelligent transportation systems in support of ferry services.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\"Minister Sohi and the new government understand the importance of ferries for Canadians. \u00a0Access to the New Building Canada Fund will enable operators to make crucial investments that will benefit passengers and the communities served by ferries. \u00a0Furthermore, the investments will help operators ensure safety on their vessels while also making sustainable improvements to their environmental efficiency ,\" said Serge Buy, CFA's Chief Executive Officer.<\/p>\n<p>The criteria changes are effective immediately and CFA expects that a number of modernization projects will now be able to move forward. L'acc\u00e8s au Nouveau Fonds Chantiers Canada permettra aux op\u00e9rateurs de r\u00e9aliser des investissements importants dont pourront tirer profit les passagers et les collectivit\u00e9s desservies par les traversiers.
