{"id":11039,"date":"2015-03-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-13T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/canadianferry.ca\/news-mv-veteran-new-fogo-island-change-islands-ferry-gets-a-new-name\/"},"modified":"2015-03-13T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T04:00:00","slug":"news-mv-veteran-new-fogo-island-change-islands-ferry-gets-a-new-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianferry.ca\/fr\/news-mv-veteran-new-fogo-island-change-islands-ferry-gets-a-new-name\/","title":{"rendered":"News: MV Veteran: New Fogo Island-Change Islands ferry gets a new name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CBC - March 13, 2015<\/p>\n<p>The new $50-million vessel that will begin serving the Fogo Island-Change Islands ferry service later this year finally has a name:\u00a0MV Veteran.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1426273741162_35\">The vessel will also pay tribute to four notable women and men from Fogo Island and Change Islands, with the\u00a0observation deck named in honour of A. R. Scammell, and the<span id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1426273741162_37\">\u00a0passenger lounges named after Capt. Fred Chaffey, Capt. Patrick Miller\u00a0and Margaret Cobb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1426273741162_31\">Newfoundland and Labrador government leaders announced the name during a ceremony on Fogo Island Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Premier Paul Davis said recent acts of violence in Canada are \"reminders of the\u00a0valiancy\"\u00a0of\u00a0Canadians who wear a uniform and serve their country.<\/p>\n<p>\"Their sacrifices, as well as the sacrifices of our veterans, have left an indelible mark on our society, and for that we must be forever grateful,\" said Davis.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0MV\u00a0Veteran is one of two identical vessels being built at a shipyard in\u00a0Romania. It is scheduled to arrive in September.<\/p>\n<p>A second vessel will serve the Bell Island run, and will arrive less than year from now.<\/p>\n<p>The vessels are expected to dramatically increase the quality of service to residents and businesses.<\/p>\n<h2>Squid Jiggin' Ground composer honoured<\/h2>\n<p id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1426273741162_39\">Arthur Reginald. Scammell was born on Change Islands in 1913, and was a prominent member of the province's arts community. He is a recipient of the Order of Canada, and composed the song <em>Squid Jiggin' Ground<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Captains Fred Chaffey and Patrick Miller both operated a ferry\u00a0service\u00a0that\u00a0connected\u00a0Change\u00a0Islands\u00a0and\u00a0Fogo\u00a0Island\u00a0to mainland\u00a0Newfoundland\u00a0for many years, while Margaret Cobb was a well-known nurse on Fogo Island.<\/p>\n<p>\"It is appropriate that we celebrate the tremendous contributions of four notable women and men from the region which will benefit from this new ferry,\" said Transportation and Works Minister David Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>The new ferry is an 80-metre ice-class vessel with the capacity to carry up to 200 passengers and 60 vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Read more, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/mv-veteran-new-fogo-island-change-islands-ferry-gets-a-name-1.2994038\">ici pour<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CBC - March 13, 2015 The new $50-million vessel that will begin serving the Fogo Island-Change Islands ferry service later this year finally has a name:\u00a0MV Veteran.
