December 15, 2014<\/p>\n<p>BC Ferries has announced it is eliminating its 3.4 percent fuel surcharge effective Wednesday, Dec 17\u00a0as the price of oil continues to fall.<\/p>\n<p>\"With the current favourable market conditions, we have been hedging our diesel fuel costs and are now in a position to eliminate the fuel surcharge,\" said BC Ferries President Mike Corrigan Monday in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\"We know that fare affordability is an issue for our customers\"<\/p>\n<p>BC Ferries said the corporation expects the fuel surcharge will be eliminated for at least a year-and-a-half.<\/p>\n<p>BC Ferries first added <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-ferries-hikes-rates-1.698576\">fuel surcharges\u00a0in 2008<\/a>, but\u00a0gave customers a rebate when fuel prices <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-ferries-drops-fuel-surcharge-in-time-for-holidays-1.742539\">fell\u00a0in 2009<\/a>,\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/b-c-ferries-fares-up-april-1-1.886799\">2010.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2011,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-ferries-raises-fuel-surcharge-on-main-routes-1.1106943\"> BC Ferries raised its\u00a0surcharge<\/a> from 2.5 per cent to five per cent on the three major routes connecting Metro Vancouver and the Island <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-ferries-scraps-fuel-surcharge-1.1253391\">before scrapping it again in 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2014 when<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-ferries-hiking-fares-3-5-to-cover-rising-fuel-costs-1.2481984\"> it implemented the latest surcharge<\/a>, the corporation said every one percent increase in the price of a litre of fuel translated at that time into a $1.2 million increase in expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The price of oil has fallen more than 45 percent since the summer due to only moderate demand and\u00a0an increase in U.S. oil production.<\/p>\n<p>Read more, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-ferries-eliminates-fuel-surcharge-as-oil-prices-fall-1.2873739\">ici pour<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Latest surcharge introduced January 2014 to be eliminated on Wednesday CBC -
